Welcome to Nutmeg & Vinegar! I’m so happy you found me. I am Maayke, the photographer and recipe developer behind Nutmeg & Vinegar.

I live with my husband and children in a beautiful town in the Netherlands and have a passion for history, especially the history of food. I love trying recipes from the 17th and 18th centuries and finding ways to use them with modern ingredients.
Of course, that's not all I do.
When I'm not in the kitchen, I'm often looking for old cookbooks, I like to be outside, visit family and I'm always thinking about what else I want to share with you.
Since I received my first antique cookbook from my sister some years ago, I have been trying to convert those recipes to the modern kitchen. Some of those recipes were so delicious that I shared them here. Those include my carrot soup and my recipes for pepernoten, speculaas, and Dutch Easter bread.
But my love for cooking has been around much longer than that. Anyone who knows me knows that I was already experimenting in the kitchen at a very young age! As a result, the kitchen was regularly covered in flour and pasta sauce.
The real cooking started when I was about 15 years old, but after that, I never stopped, adapting all recipes to my taste.
What will you find on Nutmeg & Vinegar?
Here, you will find easy recipes made with everyday ingredients, classics with a twist. Especially the flavors of classic European dishes like advocaat, coq au vin, draadjesvlees, and hachee.
By the way, I find it very important that my recipes are accessible to everyone, so that's why you'll find regular explanations on how to prepare something or why some ingredients are indispensable.
PS: I also get a lot of visitors from the Netherlands and Belgium so I made a Dutch translation of this website.
